Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) said that the Indonesian coconut industry has quite large potential. This can be seen from the amount of Indonesian coconut production which is relatively large in the world.
Data from the International Coconut Community (ICC) 2023 states that Indonesia is ranked 2nd as the country with the largest coconut production in the world. In terms of figures, Indonesia’s production is 2.86 million metric tons (24% share). And Indonesia is the 2nd largest exporter in the world at US$ 2.11 billion (13.59% share).
“Coconut is known as the tree of life. All parts of the plant, flesh, water, shell, fiber and trunk can be processed and sold in local and international markets,” said Zulhas at the 59th ICC Session & Ministerial Meeting, Bandar Lampung, Tuesday (5/11/2023).
This answers the question of which country is the largest copra producer in the world.
So why can Indonesia be the largest coconut producing country in the world?
World coconut production centers
The world’s coconut grain production centers based on FAO data from 2014-2018 are in five countries, namely Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and Brazil. Of these production centers, Indonesia ranks second as the largest coconut producing country in the world with an average production of 18.04 million tons of coconut grains. Indonesia’s coconut production achievement contributes 29.69 percent to the world’s total coconut production.
Consistency of Indonesian coconut production
Indonesia’s dominance as the largest coconut producing country in the world has lasted for at least five consecutive years from 2014-2018.
As a coconut producer, Indonesia competes closely with the Philippines which consistently ranks second.
Likewise with India which has always ranked third in terms of coconut production since 2014.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka and Brazil compete in fourth and fifth places. In 2014, Brazil’s coconut production surpassed Sri Lanka, but since 2015 Sri Lanka has succeeded in increasing its production and surpassing Brazil’s coconut production.
